SPRAT (Society for Promoting Rationality) was formally registered in 2002, and operates out of Ahmedabad [of Gandhiji's fame] and is India's national award winning NGO led and patronized by distinguished governors and advisors and supported by well-known international funders. Though primarily focused on promoting rationality, scientific temper, inter-faith harmony and justice at large, in our immediate surroundings we also work to promote adult literacy and empowerment of the impoverished. Besides a dedicated team of professionals we have volunteers ad-hoc and regular. We regularly host interns from Indian and foreign universities. SPRAT's literacy and education, livelihood and recreation and other empowering initiatives directly helped empower over 1.65 lakh youth, women and children. But it recognizes the miles it has yet to travel. Amongst its funders and patrons are Govt of Gujarat, ONGC, BSNL, IOC, Tata Chemicals, the Ford Foundation, US State Dept, Mr L K Advani, Mr I K Gujral, Mr Chandrashekhar etc. SPRAT was chaired by Lord Bhikhu Parekh after the demise of Dr I G Patel, former RBI Governor.
